Looking back at the 2nd hole at Portsalon Golf Club
Those going to Ireland are extremely remiss if the northwest portion of the country is not on the golf radar screen.
Portsalon Golf Club often does not receive a lion’s share of attention, but make no mistake about it the club provides one of the finest holes in all the country.
Commencing from an elevated tee the par-4 2nd is a clear test of nerve and mandates top tier execution. The hole turns left and invites the bold aggressive tee shot. However, getting too close on the left side can extract some serious pain on the scorecard. An adjoining penalty area awaits on the left and works its way down that side, before veering right and protecting the green on the approach.
Those going too far right on the tee shot in the hopes of avoiding the doom on the left face a considerable challenge. Added length and the penalty area lie directly in front of the green. The best advice is if there’s any doubt the penalty area cannot be safely crossed it is best to lay-up before it and then pitch onto to the green.
The green provides sufficient landing area for the approach but not enough to handle the haphazard effort.
The putting surface does have internal movements but they are subtle in nature and require a keen touch in applying the proper marriage between pace and direction.
Portsalon is an engaging layout showcasing a quality mixture of different holes. The setting for golf is one that will inspire players throughout the round. The 2nd comes early in the round and golfers will relish both the views provided and the challenge faced.
