Tewkesbury Park is a classic country hotel with a very good golf course and a range of other facilities, which make it one of the most compelling facilities in the region. Whether you are looking for a quiet weekend away, a corporate event, a wedding or a special party, then you need look no further then Tewkesbury Park.
Over the last couple of years it has had substantial overhauls, both to the hotel and the golf course. The 6,579 yard par 72 18-hole golf course was originally designed by highly acclaimed golf architect Frank Pennink - whose Vilamoura Old Course in Portugal is among the most revered in the Algarve - and was recently tweaked with sensitivity by Peter McEvoy, the former amateur champion. It has been substantially adjusted, with dozens of bunkers having been refurbished, so that it provides an excellent challenge to top golfers whilst maximising the enjoyment of the normal amateur golfer. McEvoy, together with the specialist agronomist, John Clarkin, have now set up the course with clearly defined hitting areas for all types of player.
McEvoy and Clarkin previously worked together on the award-winning Powerscourt Golf Club in Ireland. Clarkin has prepared courses for the U.S Open, the Solheim Cup and the Ladies European Tour. Together, they have overseen the refurbishment of many of the bunkers and the overall conditioning has improved immeasurably. This has been helped by the hotel investing in a full range of new Toro machinery to help to raise playing surfaces to the highest standard, with Paul Hathaway a recent arrival as Tewkesbury Park’s new Head Greenkeeper. The landing zones for amateur golfers are slightly wider, but all players get excellent conditions and a really good visual and physical challenge awaits for visiting players. Best of all it is really great fun to play the course now. There has also been an upgrade of the changing rooms and the practice facilities, which include a six-hole Academy course - ideal for a warm up or for those learning the game - a 6-bay covered range and practice putting green.
Inside, the 93 bedroom luxury hotel and spa now offers the complete golf break with outstanding accommodation. Golfers looking for the ultimate luxury golf break now have six brand-new historic suites to choose from, each offering five-star levels of opulence, detail and traditional quality rarely found in English golf hotels.
There are individually-designed ‘Opulence’ and ‘Indulgence’ rooms in the 18th Century manor house. All have bay windows with views overlooking the course, surrounding countryside and the distant Malvern Hills. The remainder of Tewkesbury Park’s bedrooms now offer a minimum of four-star style, comfort and interiors – with superb Hypnos beds in every room.
There is a well-equipped gym and two new spa treatment rooms for those looking for some pampering, including a lovely indoor pool and a sauna - perfect for those relaxing after golf, or instead of golf.
Tewkesbury Park now boasts state of the art facilities for meetings and events with the glass fronted Cotswold Suite providing a stunning room for up to 300 guests overlooking the course, providing panoramic views in the distance. Immediately adjacent are the Berkeley Bar and Terrace with wood-fired pizza bar and BBQ, with the course and Malvern Hills providing a stunning backdrop as the evening sunsets.
In early November Tewkesbury Park won the prestigious Condé Nast Johansens Award for Best UK & Ireland Hotel 2019 For Weddings, Parties & Special Occasions, and it was also recently ranked among Great Britain & Ireland’s top 100 golf resorts.
Patrick Jones, General Manager elaborates:
“To receive national recognition for both aspects of our business – the golfing side and the hotel side – puts the seal on what has been a truly spectacular year for Tewkesbury Park. We aim to provide the best possible golfing break experience. Every golf day is definitely a ‘special occasion’ to us, so to be ranked as the UK and Ireland’s premier special occasions destination so soon after our refurbishment is a major validation of our recent investment, and also of the tremendous team effort shown by our staff and our owners. In the last 18 months I believe that we have put Tewkesbury Park at the forefront of golf hotels in the UK.”
Dog lovers are often disadvantaged when it comes to visiting hotels with their beloved pets, but not at Tewksbury Park. Dogs are not just allowed, they are positively pampered in special rooms, with their own luxurious beds. It is a great touch and one not lost on the millions of dog owners who love a golf break.
There is tremendous attention to detail at the complex and this is also obvious with the staff, who are all friendly and well informed. They are well trained and well led and nothing is too much trouble to ensure that every visitor’s needs are looked after.
