The clubhouse is beautifully appointed and sits behind the 18th green providing wonderful views for golfers contemplating their round.
Las Colinas is a superb golf course, rated in the top 100 in Europe. It is part of a large development which includes plenty of houses, restaurants, Golf Academy and various other features.
Situated in the south-east of Spain close to Murcia and Alicante, the course has been built to a very high standard with top-quality paths and a substantial road network connecting the facilities to the rest of the development.
Designed by the American architect Cabell B. Robinson, creator of other internationally renowned courses, the golf course at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club is a true gem.
From a playing perspective, the course has generous fairways which undulate through trees, rocky landscape and well-positioned water features. It’s a good test and can be played off a variety of different tee markers. The routing of a course is always a tricky element for architects to consider and there are quite a few long walks between greens and tees. This is absolutely no problem for the majority of golfers who play in golf buggies, but it is quite a tiring course to walk due to the additional yardage between the playing areas.
As with most courses which are set up to appeal to the resort market, it is not overly difficult from the yellow tees, but provides an excellent test - which is greatly enhanced with anything above a gentle breeze. The 17th hole from the white markers is particularly tough, and if into the wind it can be almost impossible for a good player to reach in one shot. The greens are in pristine condition and run at a good speed throughout the year, particularly if you are above the pin on some of the more undulating greens. This adds greatly to the fun.
The fairways and bunkers are presented perfectly and, despite there being many opportunities to ruin your scorecard, the course is a very fair challenge.
Green fees start at around 68 euros up to 123 euros for peak times. The resort operates dynamic pricing in order to maximise its revenue, therefore if the tee sheet is looking a little lighter than the management would like special offers are released onto its website, often including buggy hire which is almost essential to get the most out of a visit to Las Colinas.
In addition to its par-71 championship layout, the course offers a complete range of facilities: a short game area designed by European Tour winner Miguel Ángel Jiménez, a natural grass practice area, a large putting green and a Callaway pyramid of the highest quality practice balls. A full teaching academy is available for group and individual lessons.
The clubhouse contains a splendid Japanese restaurant and it’s modern angular architecture also features a wonderful sun terrace where golfers can relax before and after their round, enjoying excellent food and drink from a broad and traditional menu.
Troon Golf, world leader in the management, development, and marketing of golf courses at the highest level, has been selected to advise Las Colinas Golf & Country Club in the management of the golf course, so that visitors can have a unique experience. Troon are very upmarket golf operators and it shows throughout the complex: there is exceptional attention to detail and the whole site glistens with excellent maintenance and thoughtful work.
The resort has won several awards, including best villa resort on several occasions. The raquets club has tennis and padel courts and there is a very well appointed gym. It even has its own Minimart, a very convenient supermarket for on-site residents to get the essentials for daily living, including wine, beer and fresh bread.
Visitors who wish to stay on site at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club can choose from modern two, three and four bedroom fully equipped apartments and villas with large gardens or terraces, car parking and green areas with communal swimming pool. The accommodation is ideal for weekend breaks, longer holiday stays or for celebrating group events held over several days, with competitive rates on offer.
The villas are all of a more modern style and much use is made of gabion walls to create terraces above the golf course. The villas have been carefully designed to blend in to the landscape so one doesn’t have the impression of being overwhelmed by real estate. The planting of trees and other vegetation also helps to soften the impact of the villas and disguise much of their presence. Most of the villas have spectacular views across the course and the rest of the landscape, whilst there are also some high-quality apartments.
An important part of any golf resort is where to eat and drink once the sun goes down. The clubhouse is a great option with its traditional fare from breakfast to the evening served inside or on the sprawling patio with excellent views across the 18th green and fairway; it is perfectly positioned. Also in the clubhouse is the impressive Japanese restaurant called Umawa with an extensive selection of delicious dishes. There is also Il Palco, a stylish Italian restaurant, as well as the Wow Beach restaurant and beach club, with stunning infinity pool overlooking a gorgeous sandy beach, which is a must during the hot summer months.
The gym at Las Colinas Sports & Health Club, which has spectacular views of the countryside, is equipped with a full range of cardio and muscle-building machines that are ideally suited for both fitness and strength training.
Admission includes a towel for use during work outs. In addition, bathroom towels and an individual locker in the changing room will be provided at no extra cost. A personal trainer is available along with a Physiotherapist and yoga sessions. To top it off, there are beauty rooms for relaxation and specialist therapies.
So overall, Las Colinas Golf & Country Club really does have it all. Perhaps best of all, the staff are very attentive and cheerful. Nothing is too much trouble for the visiting golfer. This is certainly a course that needs to be seen and played.
